If it wasn’t for Kelly Luegenbiehl, Vice President of International Originals at Netflix, the series would’ve been a standalone Netflix film instead. Luegenbiehl convinced producers to turn The Witcher into a series as there was “so much material” to use from across the eight novels,
When Henry Cavill first heard that The Witcher was being made, he met the team at Netflix to be considered for the role of Geralt. At the time however, showrunner Lauren Schmidt turned him down as there wasn’t even a script and the show was in very early works. More than 200 actors went on to audition for the role of Geralt of Rivia before Henry Cavill was finally cast. Schmidt revealed that she kept hearing Cavill’s voice in her head when she was writing the script, so when she met Cavill again in his audition, and he read the lines she had written live in front of her in his real voice, she instantly knew that Cavill was Geralt.
The first season was filmed at several locations in and around Budapest, Spain, Poland and Austria between October 2018 and May 2019.
Henry Cavill went through a heavy training regime to prepare for the role and stunts performed. Cavill shot all the actions scenes without a stunt double and took on extensive sword-training to get ready to play Geralt.
Before the first season began streaming, Netflix had renewed the series for a second season consisting of eight episodes.
