1. Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Rise of the Planet of the Apes acts as a reboot to the original Planet of the Apes series and begins a new series in the franchise. After its great success, the film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and even grossed $431 million against its $93 million budget! A sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was released in 2014 and a third film titled War for the Planet of the Apes will follow in 2017.
2. The Incredible Hulk
The Incredible Hulk (2008) is a remake to 2003’s The Hulk (which nearly everyone has forgotten about anyway). The remake acts as the second film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Mark Ruffalo has appeared in The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron reprising his role and will also appear in Thor: Ragnarok and with his fellow Avengers in Infinity War.
3. X-Men: First Class
X-Men: First Class is the fifth instalment in the X-Men series. It serves as a prequel and a soft-reboot of the franchise. The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn and is the only film in the series that is not directed by Bryan Singer! First Class was a box office success earning $353.6 million worldwide. A sequel titled X-Men: Days of Future Past followed in 2014 and a third film titled X-Men: Apocalypse was released in 2016.
4. Jurassic World
Jurassic World is the fourth instalment in the Jurassic Park series and is set 22 years after the events of Jurassic Park. It is the second-highest grossing film of 2015 and the fourth highest grossing film of all time! In its opening weekend, the film grossed more than $500 million worldwide and grossed a whopping $1.6 billion overall! After the great success, it’s no surprise that there will be a sequel which will be released in 2018 with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard set to return.
5. Star Trek
2009’s Star Trek is a reboot to the original Star Trek television series. It is the 11th film in the Star Trek franchise and features original Star Trek characters however, portrayed by a brand new cast. Since its successful release, a sequel titled Star Trek Into Darkness was released in 2013 and a third film titled Star Trek Beyond was released in July 2016.
6. Ocean’s Eleven
Ocean’s Eleven is a direct remake of Ocean’s 11 (1960). The ensemble cast included George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle and more stars. The film was a worldwide success and grossed a total of $450.7 million. Two sequel’s titled Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen followed the first film. The three films altogether grossed $1.1 billion and make up the Ocean’s Trilogy.
7. Casino Royale
2006’s Casino Royale is the second film adaptation of Ian Fleming’s 1953 novel of the same name. The first adaptation was 1967’s Casino Royale. The 2006 Bond film marks the first time that Daniel Craig portrayed 007. It is the twenty-first film in the James Bond film series and grossed $599 million making it the fourth highest grossing film of 2006!
8. 21 Jump Street
21 Jump Street (2012) is a film adaptation of the 1987 television series of the same name. The film adaptation stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as two police officers who relive a high school experience when assigned an undercover task to find a drug dealer within a high school. Johnny Depp who starred in the TV series even had a cameo towards the end of the film! The film was an international success and grossed $201.6 million worldwide. A sequel titled 22 Jump Street was released in 2014 and a Men in Black/Jump Street crossover is currently in the works along with a female spin-off.
Scarface (1983) is a direct remake of 1932’s film of the same name. The film stars Al Pacino as Cuban drug lord Tony Montana along with Michelle Pfeiffer who played Tony’s drug addict trophy wife. The film grossed $65.9 million which was a decent amount of box office success for its time! A sequel is rumoured to currently be in the works.
10. The Departed
The Departed (2006) is a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film Internal Affairs. The film is directed by Martin Scorsese and stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Alec Baldwin, Vera Farmiga, Martin Sheen and more! The 2006 film was a box office success and grossed $289.9 million worldwide.
